Sun's basketball returned to the Sun Dome this weekend to officially open up the 2016-2017 season. The Suns had a successful weekend splitting their two home games going 1-1 but showed very strong signs in both games getting all of the Sun's fans excited for what could be a very successful season. The Suns were able to grab a victory over Pasco-Hernando State College on Thursday night before falling to Florida National University on Saturday.
Thursday's game saw the Suns get off to a quick start before falling off a bit just before half time heading into the break with things knotted up at 29-29. However, when the halftime intermission ended so did the Sun's scoring drought. The Suns scored 55 points in the second half almost doubling their halftime total and pulled out an 84-76 victory. Sophomore Josh Grover (SO/Jacksonville, FL) led the way in the scoring department with 25 points while Senior Duane Howard (SR/Albany, GA) had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as did Junior Jon Baker (JR/Jacksonville, FL) who contributed 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in the Sun's opening night victory.
Saturday the Suns faced Florida National University. The Suns had themselves a very strong first half staying stride for stride with the Conquistadores only trailing at half 39-42. Unfortunately this would be a tale of two halves for the Suns as they were plagued with turnovers; missed shots and many missed free throws allowing Florida National to pull away in the second half. The Suns dropped the game with a final score of 74-92.
