The Sun's basketball team was in action Saturday in a very special alumni game. The Suns used this game as an opportunity to see exactly what their strengths and weaknesses are going into this season. It is also a good chance for the fans to experience the Suns in action before the season begins and to see familiar faces from years past.
The alumni provided a blast from the past for all suns fans with a roster consisting of James Riggs, Shane Smarr, Ed Eduardo, Nick Winkleman, Aj Williams, Monty Lynch, Mike Delond, Juwan Brae and Adam Daniels.
The game itself was very competitive. Both teams shared the momentum swings and high caliber plays that left the fans on their feet. The alumni team seemed to be on their way to a victory at the end of regulation until Caleb Winfrey (SR/Orlando, FL) was fouled on a 3-point shot with 1.8 seconds to go. Winfrey was able to knock down all 3 free throws and force the game into overtime. After back and forth action the game was still tied at the end of overtime number one forcing a second overtime. When the second overtime began the alumni team turned up the pressure and intensity and found a way to pull away and finish the game with a win over the Suns 105-100.
Overall the Alumni Game was a great preparation game for the Suns. There was a lot of positive play from the Suns with Josh Grover (SO/Jacksonville, FL) leading the team with 39 points followed by Jon Baker (JR/Jacksonville, FL) with 18 points. It's great to see such a wonderful tradition being revived once again in the Sun-Dome and we look forward to this tradition for many years to come.
